“Wiyaala is sensational”
DJ Rita Ray’s artistes to watch out for in 2015 on BBC Africa

“Looking at The All Africa Music Awards, it is obvious that it didn’t take an expert to see the talent
that Wiyaala is. Given that I know, and that I have not just heard several of the recipients (famous
and not so famous), of the awards, but also met and photographed them, I think that Wiyaala is right
where she should be , for a very long time to come”

“unyielding Wiyaala blew away the richly diverse audience at Alliance Francaise”
Circumspect: Wiyaala in Concert, The Making of an African legend

The Beginning

Born in Wa, the capital town of the Upper West Region of Ghana, Wiyaala is the second of
four sisters. Her mother was a chorister and her father a local government health official. Her
childhood was spent in Funsi, a small village in the region which acquired electricity just five
years ago and in Tumu (the last town before Burkina Faso) where she did the larger part of her
schooling.
At a very young age, Wiyaala ttracted attention as an entertainer, artist and competitive
athleticism. After school, she gravitated to the local music scene in Wa and featured on local
artists recordings as a session singer. In the latter part of this period, she saved enough money to
record an album of her own songs at Echo Soundz in Wa.
